IP telephony is gaining momentum at an astonishing rate. Like other similar industry-changing technologies, it is being embraced by astute business users to solve problems and create competitive advantages in ways not previously possible. In the early days, carriage savings were often touted as the main benefit, however IP telephony has never really been about lowering telecommunications costs. Similarly, a reduction in operational and support costs through the convergence of voice and data on to a single network, while important is not the primary attraction. It’s about ‘virtualisation’, a term that is already finding its way into our modern ‘IP’ vocabulary.
